Anal dilation can be a discomfiting experience for many patients and caretakers. They may worry about physical discomfort from the anal dilator; they may fear self-injury or injury to their child or to the person they have been entrusted to care for. In order to overcome these obstacles, there are two factors that contribute to the avoidance of unnecessary fear. First, information is an important element in putting individuals at ease with the procedure. The second important factor is the design of the implement being used. Anal dilators should be simple to handle and, of course, as comfortable as possible for the patient.

Anal dilator for therapeutic use

Older patients may often be required to administer self-dilation. When using an anal dilator for self-dilation, it is imperative that the tool is easy to hold and control. The "Long" dilator version and special finger grips at the base of SSP dilators provide a very secure grasp for easy handling. This will mean a more confident, more relaxed patient who is therefore more likely to continue with the prescribed therapy regimen.

Because anal dilation is often prescribed for infants who have undergone laparoscopy and anoplasty surgeries, it is critical that pediatric anal dilators are smooth and free of surface defects that may cause harm to delicate tissues. SSP dilators are carefully manufactured for ultimate comfort, and because each dilator is marked with the size, parents and other caretakers can feel confident that they are using the right diameter implement at the right time over the course of the child's therapy.
